So This is How the Other Half Lives

I'm going to depart this week from my usual routine. But this week was different anyway.

You see, I needed to be close to Dallas because my 45th High School reunion was Friday and Saturday. So I did some research on parks around town, and decided to upgrade my usual surroundings and book into a resort. Hey, even retirees can use a vacation from time to time!

I looked at lots of locations, and Mill Creek Ranch Resort looked promising, so I booked a couple of weeks there. I'll tell ya' the words Ranch and Resort fit the place. I've been to some pretty nice places in the past. Every year my company would host a conference for it's Engineering and Operations group and would put us up in top notch places around the country. Mill Creek is a little different, but I'd put it up with some of those.

This isn't just an RV resort, although the accommodations for RV's is top notch. They also have tiny homes, cabins and yurts available for rent, and some of the cabins can be purchased if one is so inclined.

There's also stuff for groups. A covered outdoor dining area overlooks a small creek and has all the goodies, including a huge smoker, and the grand lodge is, well it's grand.

Several playgrounds are scattered around the resort, with sport courts, those cool wood swing/playsets, and human sized chess, checkers, even battleship (named the battle of Mill Creek. cool.) And there's a short 9 hole disc golf course. In other words lots of things to keep the kiddies busy.

Hey! It's Texas! It's hot in the summer. Not to worry, grasshopper. They have not one, but two pools. Near the RV lodge (yep we have our own lodge) is a larger family style pool with one of those playsets immediately adjacent. And up by the lodge there is an infinity pool with a waterfall.

In the mood to take a walk? Not a problem, there are trails throughout the resort, beautifully landscaped with ponds (yep, there's fish in them thar ponds, but beware. It's catch and release, and they're serious about that), waterfalls and beau coups foliage. My morning walks were an adventure. I kept finding cool stuff.

The cottages are really nice. They are arranged in little villages, connected by cart paths (carts can be rented at the resort, or bring your own, that's OK.) You can rent by the day, week, month or you can buy them or buy a lot and build.

And the place is still growing. At the far end, they were clearing land for what I heard will be primitive and group camping facilities.

There's a whole lot to do there. Live music in the Grand Lodge on Fridays. Dinners on Fridays and Saturdays are popular. And of course, there's the main attraction in Canton. The resort is only about 2 miles from the First Monday Trade Days grounds.

Hmm.. I know I'm forgetting something. OH yeah! Just the whole reason I'm here. The RV parking is the best I've been at so far (easy, folks. I said so far.) Most of the sites are pull through with landing strip long pads of level concrete and full hookups (of course). They have these cute little Disneyesque stanchions for the utilities, that also have cable TV.

Each site also has a picnic table and one of those round state park style fire pits. They even give you a free bundle of wood when you check in, but you have to ask for it.

And for those of you who RV - Fast WiFi. I mean REALLY fast. There are repeaters at about every other pad site. Mine was 20 feet away and I got 35Mb down.

The staff is the best. Very friendly, and always busy. The resort shows it too in that its very well maintained.

Geez, Terry. You're sounding like a fanboy. Is their ANYTHING wrong with the resort? I gotta be honest, for what I paid, I would expect to search hard to find anything to knock the place. And there are a couple.

Not a whole lot of shade, for starters. The park is relatively new, so the trees are not yet mature and it's kinda hard to get out of that Texas summer sun. But at least they have trees, which is more than I can say for other parks.

And the roads in the back part of the resort, near the Grand Lodge are in pretty sad shape. But an inside source told me they are working on that. This last winter was so wet that they couldn't do it during the slow season, but it's on the books for this year.

That's it for this week. No YouTube again. I'm going to unlatch the vault and spring for some new camera equipment, but that will be a couple of weeks out.

In the meantime, I've expanding my horizons. Next week. I'm off our neighbor to the east, Louisiana. Gonna see how they do it in the bayou state.

So, for now,

Later Folks.
