How About a Stay in a Presidio?

The living room. Forgive the quality. I didn't have access, so this is a pic of a pic from the brochure (courtesy Friends of the Fort.)

Yeah, I know. It ain't Sunday, but I was wandering around Goliad - yep, that Goliad, as in "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!- and of course I went to the Presidio la Bahia.

This is where the Goliad massacre happened. But more on that in a later post. The fun thing is: you can actually spend the night at La Bahia! This one is definitely going on my bucket list.

Here's the deal. For about $215 a night, you can book The Quarters, a converted officer's quarters consisting of 2 bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom complete with many modern conveniences (A/C and heat, and a shower for instance).

And it gets cooler from there. As a guest, you get the run of the place (sorta), you have unencumbered access to the inner courtyard of the presidio. They recommend bringing a folding chair to watch the sun set or rise over the courtyard walls. Folks, this is the only fully restored Spanish mission from the days of Texas independence. Hard to pass that up.

Or, if your a spook hound, you can cut the lights, light the provided prayer candle and search the shadows for ghosts of 150 plus years of occupation. Oh, yeah, I want to do that.

Stays at The Quarters a pretty popular. A quick perusal of the online calendar shows only a few open nights this month, and heavy bookings into spring.

And you'd be helping to conserve Texas history. La Bahia is owned by the Catholic church, but all expenses are paid by the Friends of the Fort through donations, entrance and guide fees and specials like The Quarters.

If you're interested in staying at The Quarters, or want more info on La Bahia and the FOF the website is www.presidiolabahia.org. Get there quick if you want to beat me to it.

More on Goliad, and other sites from my quick tour through the early times of the Texas fight for Independence later. I'll be posting this weekend, as well.

Until then: hasta luego, amigos.
